Rebellion managed to beat Toyota on pace in the Shanghai WEC race. First time since Porsche beat them at Silverstone in 2017 that Toyota wasn’t first to the line. First time since Sebring 2012 that a non-hybrid won too.

Toyota has still been in another league from the privateers all season. I think they missed the aero setup for this race by a long way. They had no straight line speed outside of hybrid boost. The Hybrids have always been 200+ HP down on the non hybrids outside of boost but I have never seen it translate to a speed differential like this.

The BOP isn’t there for Le Mans, so I don’t think Toyota really gives a shit.

No success ballast for Le Mans or are they de restricting the Toyotas to some level ? I haven’t heard anything about Toyota being given extra power for Le Mans. Toyota was easily 15mph slower on the straights outside of boost which isn’t a ballast issue and would murder them at Le Mans.

An advantage in corners and under acceleration but a disadvantage down the straights due to ballast? I’m pretty sure adding weight to a race car hurts you into and out of the corners without affecting top speed (I have some friends who do some land speed racing and they routinely strap up to 300lbs of lead to their cars). There’s a different reason why they are beyond slow down the straights. He does raise a point about the ballast being different for identical cars.

It’s not just weight
“ This Success Handicap will be limited and regulated for the season. The handicap may be the result of ballast, or a modification to the power output. It is not just ballast, which is why it’s known as a Success Handicap and not Success Ballast.”
